The last PCC the TTC ever acquired was ex-Kansas City A-14 all-electric class PCC #4779. This class operated in Toronto from 1958 until 1976, and as the days waned, railfans hurried out to charter these vehicles to offer their farewells. How pleasant is Mount Pleasant? We don't live there, so we don't know the whole story, but had we been there to ride the streetcar line that existed there from 1925-1976 we'd would have a better opinion. In this retrospective from footage with Richard Glaze and Damian WK Baranowski and we can now see what was once there, on Mount Pleasant. (NOTE: When we say that the Mount Pleasant Streetcar wa...

great vids back in the day !!!not the same town now!!
This car has VISION?
I Love Renforth Station!❤
So pleased that someone had the foresight and the Camera technology to Record these images for Posterity, so Future generations can appreciate them and see how our city / nation has evolved. Now that Iphone cameras are so available, everyone has become a documentary filmmaker. I already feel a bit "old" because I recall when certain Toronto subway stations like Kipling and Kennedy and the St. Clair West line first opened and/or when certain bus routes werent in existence.
Were you in the garbage train
Long before my time but very cool to see what TO looked like while my parents were growing up.
I have family footage of Toronto from the early 50’s, the 60’s, the 70’s and the 80’s. My grandfather used to walk around with his video recorder every where he went.
Share it dude. Convert and share on UA-cam. I love that stuff
How long does it take to get across the entire island?
About 5 hours. Some of the trains running in Hainan do run the full loop, starting and ending at the same station. -RYS
Took a return trip to Windsor from Toronto this past weekend. Lots of people yapping loudly, I e lady was watching a movie with no headphones...full volume...another guy sitting in the 4 seat section was spread out yapping on his phone the whole trip, had his shoes off and feet up on the opposite seat ...Ive been on better rides than this. I hate being forced to wear noise cancelling headphones when I enjoy the quiet ambience of a train ride
Thanks for this. I still see Kingston Road between Victoria Park and Queen St. East as the artery of my life. Between 2.00 and 3.05, Richard Glaze is shooting from the north side of Kinston Road, first north and then south of my parents's first house at 544 Kingston Road. Demolished in the mid-1980s. They lived there from 1951-54. We then moved to 218 Balsam, just behind Sherrin's Funeral Home, shown at 4.01. That house was demolished in 2014 or so. And that whole block with Sherrins' and the YMCA was likewise demolished and redeveloped. In February of 1957, in a blinding snow storm, we moved to 293 Silver Birch, which was in the family until 2001. It was subsequently renovated, the interiors transformed into a glitzy palace. Walking along Kingston Road, I went to the shops, stores and local schools. For years we took the streetcar from the stop at the top of Scarborough Road to Queen and Yonge to shop at Eaton's and Simpson's. Yes, there's was life beyond Yonge Street. Whenever I'm in the city, I drive along Kingston Road and the streets that branch off it. Now 55 years later, it's haunting to see it in the summer of 1969. Seemingly, other than where I lived, for the most part, the buildings. and houses on Kingston are the same, endure. The people are different. Thanks
Thanks TT - I miss those venerable cars - they were solid and reliable. Grew up with them in the 80's - 200's. RIP CLRV's +
Nice that these films of trolleybuses in Kitchener, ON were made despite the rain. Thanks for sharing! By the way, Chicago ended their trolleybus service just five days later on March 31, 1973.
The 4600 shown in this video is the first 4600, the A-10, ex Cincinnati Street Railway 1125, not to be confused with the second 4600, which was the A-15 (the rebuilt A-8 originally numbered 4505).
nothing is done with recycling, it is all trash, maybe under a magnet for metal. only 4% of material is ever recycled, its all a feel good program. Most plastic is not recyclable.
I really enjoy looking at videos of historic Toronto Especially those in the 1890s
I can’t wait to ride the LRT later this year!!
its opening this year?
@@transitgoods2477 They will give an opening date 3 months before
@@transitgoods2477 Metrolinx said they would give us 3 months notice of an opening date!
Fabulous to see. Thank you!
0:43 - unless Finch West opens first, which wouldn’t surprise me.
Yeah, I fully expect Finch West to open first!!
I hope that's not full speed
Hopefully it’s the average speed.
Great video but it’s missing just one thing. Subtitles. They would make an already interesting video that much more interesting.
I hope not, the driver better floor it on the surface sections lol
Line 5 runs with a 3 tram set. And TTC still testing with 2. Would be hilarious if Line 6 opens sooner.
Thanks very much for the great work!! Keep it up!! Cheers,
The Leafs are going to win the Cup!! It's 1962! My bit...I wired the front Terminal Boards, the Computers, as well as doing Check and Test, on the CLRV Streetcar Line, at Canada Car Thunder Bay! Proud? You bet! Canada Car also built the Hawker Hurricane, one of the better Fighter Airplanes of WW II. It was significant in the Battle of Britain.
You understood!!
i wish i could go back in time :-(
Ding ding!!!
Business class is a must. Single seats👍
Really miss those streetcars. They were so wide and spacious
We are lucky somebody made these films and they survived.
Exquisite colours!.. thank you for posting!... As a person who spent over 25 years working at TTC Hillcrest, I wonder if there is any vintage films of the same?
Great video, thanks for the upload!! It's a shame that a once respected system is now a shadow of its former self. Especially the subway system. Let someone who lived 100 years ago ride today, I'd give anything for their reaction.
I throughly enjoyed this video from beginning to end. A fantastic glimpse of yesteryear. I just love the ttc buses and streetcars and the cars of the 50s and 60s.
Was this transferred from 8/S8 mm or 16mm film?
16mm film.
Really fantastic! I'm not a transit/train buff, but I love the vintage TO footage!
Before anybody else says it, one mistake crept into this video: when we said PCC 4779 was the highest number assigned to any streetcar in Toronto, we are of course forgetting ALRV 4900 -- UTDC's prototype which operated in the city for a few months in the late 1980s. Ah, well.
Thank You, I remember/recognize pretty much, ALL of it.
Riding the TTC looks so chill and even fun back then. Nowadays, you're packed in like sardines, and on occasions have to deal with rowdy teens, and mentally ill people and risk getting stabbed.
I still ride the system for fun (I call it taking a long walk with assistance). You have to pick your times. The system also had a reputation for packing them in back in my day (the eighties -- that's when they initially talked about a Downtown Relief Line to deal with the humungous crowds at Bloor-Yonge), and we had our fair share of rowdy drunks and teens in those days (wasn't nice to share a car with them). We tend to forget the distressing stuff in the past, while being confronted with it in the present. I think the fact is, there's been good and bad things about this city for as long as it has been a city.
Bru, they had to remove it? 😢
Yeah, it's a shame. The system needed to be renewed and I guess they though tit was cheaper to buy diesel buses. Maybe if they had some foresight, they could have partnered with Thunder Bay and Cornwall to share volume discounts, and we could have three mid-sized cities with electric transit in this day and age. But at least Waterloo Region now has a good LRT.
Great video. The people making the negative comments about how Toronto is going down in flames or dying or whatever don't realize they make these comments because their own end is near; the city will be fine and will go on.
Thank you for this great video capturing a different era in Canadian public transportation. Wonderful color film footage of the Toronto streetcar system. Love the look of the freeways back then. BTW, my family and I traveled to Toronto a few times, mainly to see the Canadian National Exhibition and to travel on some of the same freeways back in the late 60's and early 70's. It brings back wonderful memories.
Here's a question that I'm wondering: How does the transmission on these buses work with the articulated section in the middle, allowing the bus to bend side to side and up to down? I'm assuming that these buses were rear engine, but what about the brake lines, the mechanical steering box to the wheels, and the accelerator to the rear wheels? All of that... I'm just interested.
Ah 🤗 the good old days before social media
Ironically, it's through social media that we were able to bring this material to you.
this time period is when we here in Montreal used to call Toronto ..... " Toronto the Good ". Toronto was "whole some". Beautiful and it was noticed. Now every city has gone dumpster diving. Not that it's a bad thing to dumpster dive but we need to heal our cities. Just saying.
We as a family, i was very young '64 to '67 living in an area Mostly Italian, some German could not have asked for any better as a Kid living near North York.!!!
nice views from the street car, but I can't read too fast and I have to pause the video to read it !
the good old days. i remember them well. great video.
Greetings from Victoria BC. I lived in London and did some commuting by bus some 20 years ago, and my memory was that the LTC was truly terrible - much worse than on the west coast. Looks like it's improved some since I left.
NO!!! They retired the D60LF this year!
Hey, great to see that you've enjoyed (fake) London! A great place to see a lot of bus action is the northeast Sarnia / Western intersection during rush hour, where something like 8 frequent routes pass by at about a bus every minute.
A lot of memories for me in those films. As a youngster there was many a summer day I would just spend a dime and "ride the rocket" to see where it would take me. They were just starting to phase out the red subway trains when I started my joyrides, but I got to ride them often enough. I especially enjoyed them for the frequent momentary blackouts they would experience. Then, a little older, I'd take the Bathurst car to Fort York for army cadets twice a week. I swear I can still smell the Molson brewery on Fleet Street to this day.
I've never seen TTC Streetcars cross railroad tracks. Thst rare footage is s real gem.
Wow, that is amazing! Thank you for sharing such old footage! Folks are well dressed, cars are elegant, streetcars are practical and very little traffic!
